AUTUMN TERM 2008 - NEWSLETTER 15

Concerts: At the time of writing we are part way through our concerts.  We hope you have enjoyed them as much as we have. If anyone is able to help with moving the staging back to the church on Friday I would love to hear from you!

To the PTA: A big thank you to all members of the PTA for their support particularly this last week with the hampers, presents for children in Classes 1 and 2 and for organising the children’s disco.  We couldn’t do these without you.

Children’s Christmas Disco: The children’s Christmas disco, provided by the PTA, is being held tonight (18th) from 4.30 until 6.30 p.m.  This is a chance for them to put on their dancing shoes and party the evening away!  They will be having ‘tea’ during the event.  The children will need to bring the consent slip to school this evening with £1.50 to help cover the cost of the DJ.

Carols Round the Tree: Tomorrow (19th) we will be holding our traditional ‘carols round the tree’ service in the school hall at 2.30 p.m.  All family and friends are very welcome to join us.

School Meals:   The price of school lunches next term will increase to £1.80 per day (i.e. £9.00 per week). This new price is in keeping with that charged by similar establishments and we feel that the price reflects good value for money. Those wishing to pay the first half-term’s lunch money in advance should send in a cheque for £52.20, payable to Essex County Council, on the first day of the term.

Ball Update:  Many of you would have noticed a copy of the Hertfordshire Life article on display outside of school.  If you are interested in obtaining a copy of the magazine, Broad Oak Stores have ordered in a number of copies especially.  They will be available from Thursday (18th) morning. Our thanks to Elaine Saunders, our Treasurer, for delighting us with the news that the Ball made a profit of £11,995.38.  A truly wonderful achievement that we should all be very proud of.

Family Workshops:   Please think about coming along to this very useful and supportive group.  It only runs for six weeks but other schools in the area have found it very good. Refreshments are provided.

More details are posted on the parent noticeboard.

Clubs:

·          We will be holding a new Drama Club next term which will be open to children in Classes 3 and 4 only. It will start on Wednesday, 6th January and run from 3.20 until 4.20 p.m.

·          Football club will re-start on Thursday, 12th January.

Music Tuition: Some payments for music fees are way overdue.   Failure to pay the fees by tomorrow will unfortunately result in the children of the offending parents having to forego their lessons next term.

Car Parking: The Duke’s Head is now under new management: Paul and Suzy have kindly agreed to continue to allow our parents to park in the pub’s car park in the morning for dropping off the children and in the afternoon when collecting the children. We are grateful to them for allowing this and we urge parents to use this facility in order to avoid congestion along the High Street at these busy times.

Next Term: School re-starts on Monday, 5th January.

On behalf of all the staff I would like to thank you all for your support during this last term and we would like to wish you a very happy Christmas and a peaceful new year.

L Stephenson.

AUTUMN TERM 2008 - NEWSLETTER 13

Illness:  This week has seen most members of staff and over a quarter of the children absent from school with flu!  Please can I ask parents to keep their children at home if they are ill?  Sending them in when they are not up to full strength does not help their learning and keeps the ‘bug’ going round.  Your co-operation is appreciated.

Staging: We would really appreciate some help with moving the staging from the church to school first thing on Monday morning.  If you have a trailer or large car where the seats can be folded down, that would be a real bonus. Please let Mrs Pugh or myself know if you can help.

Concerts: This year we are issuing tickets for our Christmas production in order to avoid the overcrowding that has occurred in the past.  Please indicate on the slip below, your preferences. There is a limit of 3 tickets per family. If more are required please indicate on the form and we will see what we can do. Tickets will be sent out at the end of next week.

Costumes: For “Whoops-a-Daisy Angel”, please could the children in Classes 3 and 4 wear a green or

red tee shirt and tinsel cuffs, and could all children have their costumes in school by Wednesday,

10th December, in bags labelled with their names. Thank you.

Christmas Lunch: We will be having our Christmas lunch on Tuesday 16th December when the children will be served with turkey and all the usual trimmings.  There will be no cold service that day, but children who prefer sandwiches may bring them in. If your child does not normally have a school meal but would like to have a Christmas lunch, please forward £1.70 on Monday, 8th December. This will assist us in knowing how many children to cater for.

Logs: We recently had some overhanging boughs cut down from trees and the logs are at the bottom of our field.  Please help yourself if you would like to take them away for your fire.

Christingle Service: This service is being held in St Mary’s Church tomorrow (Friday) at 2.00 p.m.  It is always a lovely, moving service.  The whole school will be going over to the church - please come along and join us.

SEN Interviews: I will be holding end of term SEN interviews next week.  Parents of the children concerned should have received a letter at the beginning of the week.  Please look in your child’s bag if you have not yet received an invitation.

DDA: There is a Disability group meeting next Tuesday at 2.00 p.m. in the staffroom.

Continued overleaf…

Airport Singing:
We will be taking a group of children to Stansted Airport next Friday to sing carols for the passengers. Letters for those concerned have gone out.

PTA News: A PTA meeting will be held on Monday, 8th December at 7.30 p.m. in The Cock Inn.

Times Tables CD: Our first order is being processed. However, some requests came in after the first order had been placed so these will be held over until more orders have been received. If you require a CD, please send in £3 with a note giving your name and requirements.

Webshop: Every now and then a nice surprise drops into the PTA letter box: one such thing this week has been another cheque from the webshop.  Our thanks to everybody who is looking at the webshop and using it, you have helped raise a further £24.06 for the PTA. For those who have yet to explore this way of fundraising please have a look at www.buy.at/StMarysHBO, click on any of the links and simply shop.  It doesn't cost you anything extra, you can still take advantage of the high street sales and the PTA earns a percentage of your shopping.  There are over 100 retailers on the webshop from the Early Learning Centre, Marks and Spencer and Game to Thorntons, Teleflorist, and the Ethical Superstore.

Our thanks again and happy shopping!                                         Linda Grimes

Children’s Christmas Cards: Don’t forget to order your children’s Christmas cards online at:

www.my-school-christmas-cards.co.uk. It is recommended that orders be placed by 10th December for cards to be received in time for Christmas posting. There is currently an offer where three packs can be purchased for the price of two. £1.50 from every pack sold will go to PTA funds.

Book Bags: Please note that the price of book bags has had to be increased to £2.25 per bag to cover costs. There is usually a stock of red, royal blue or navy available. There is no increase in the price of other uniform items.

Sports Fixtures:  We are sorry that we have had to cancel several events this week.  Sadly the weather was against us and illness at one of the venue schools forced cancellation. Matches have been

re-scheduled as follows:

·          The matches against Little Hallingbury, postponed from 10th November, will take place on Thursday, 20th November. These will now be home matches.

·          The football and netball matches against Takeley, due to take place on 12th November, will now take place on Monday, 24th November. The children will leave here at 2.50 p.m. in order to get to Takeley promptly to make the most of the daylight.

School meals: Next week we will be swapping Wednesday (toad in the hole) with Thursday (homemade chicken and vegetable pie). I hope this does not cause too much inconvenience.

Museum of Childhood: Classes 1 and 2 are off to the Museum of Childhood in London tomorrow.  We hope they have a super day.

PTA News:

·          A very productive PTA meeting was held last Monday.  As a result we will be replacing the bark in the climbing frame area with a rubber surface.  We will also be able to put down the paving in the new garden to get it into use as soon as possible.  Thank you PTA from all of us!

·          The PTA will be raffling four hampers this Christmas.  As in previous years we will ask each class to collect items that could go into them.  Class 4 will be collecting items for a Christmas food hamper; Class 3 a pamper hamper; Class 2 Oriental (Chinese/Indian) and Class 1 Greek/Italian.  Ideas can range from items of food, wine, special bowls, vouchers for meals, cookery lesson etc.  Each class will have a list of ideas on the door - please come and tick off what you feel able to provide.

Singing at Stansted Airport: On Friday 12th December we will be taking 30 children to sing at Stansted Airport. We will be travelling by coach, leaving at about 9.15 a.m. and returning for 11.15 a.m. If you would like to accompany us please let me know.  I am looking for four or five volunteers only.

Learning times tables: Children in the school have been using a times table CD ROM that we are able to sell to parents.  If you are interested, please sign the form below and send it in with £3 (cheques payable to Hatfield Broad Oak School Fund, please).  I will send off an order next Thursday (22nd). If you want to see the CD in use, please come and see me and I’ll give you a demonstration.

Craft Club: Mrs Capon has volunteered to take a Craft Club for children in Class 3.  She can take up to eight children.  If your child would like to take part, please fill in the slip that he/she will be bringing home.  The club will run for the next four weeks on a Tuesday night from 3.15 until 4.15 p.m. Thank you

Mrs Capon.

INSET Day: Next Friday (21st) is a staff INSET day so there is no school for the children.

AUTUMN TERM 2008 - NEWSLETTER 7

PTA News:

·          The Ladies’ Night tonight has been cancelled: it will be re-arranged for a more convenient date.

·          Tickets (£2.50 each which includes a beverage) for the Christmas Shopping Evening on Thursday, 6th November are available from Sarah Warnes or Elaine Saunders. The evening starts at 8.00 p.m. - two hours of retail therapy!!

·          The next PTA meeting will take place at 9.00 a.m. on Monday, 10th November in the school hall.

School Library: As our Library continues to improve, we are adding a new section for “Story CDs”. Children will be allowed to take these home occasionally instead of a library book. Do you have any old story CDs you would be willing to donate to the school? If so, please see Miss Smith (Class 1).

Jeans for Genes: Mrs Kidman is very pleased to report that £102.15 was raised by the children (and some staff) who were wearing denim for the day on 3rd October. Thank you all for your support.

Visitor for Class 4: At their request, Revd David Knight will be visiting Class 4 on Tuesday afternoon to talk about faith, and why he chose to become a Vicar.

Sporting Fixtures:

·          Away football and netball matches will take place against Hatfield Heath on Tuesday, 21st October.

·          Our football and netball teams will play home matches against Little Hallingbury on Thursday, 6th November.

Class 3’s Visit to the British Museum: Please ensure that the children in Class 3 arrive at school at 8.30 a.m. for their trip to the British Museum. The coach will leave promptly at 8.45 a.m.

Class 1’s Assembly: Do join the children in Class 1 for their special assembly at 2.45 p.m. on Thursday, 6th November.

Operation Christmas Child: Filled shoe boxes should be brought into school after half-term ready for collection on the morning of Friday, 7th November. There are more leaflets in school should you require them.

Open Morning - 5th November: Mrs Stephenson will be talking to prospective parents at 9.30 a.m. and 11.00 a.m. - each talk will be followed by a tour of the school at work. If you are aware of anyone who may be thinking of applying to our school please pass this message on.

Arrival Times: Sadly there are a number of children who arrive late for school nearly every day. It may be only 5 or 10 minutes but it is a crucial part to the start of a child’s day and can be disruptive to the settling of the class.  Equally we have a small number of children who arrive very early in the morning! Children should not arrive before 8.40 a.m. and should be in the big playground, ready for the whistle, by 8.55 a.m.  Please can all parents adhere to this simple rule.

New School Meals Menu: We will shortly be sending out the new school menu which will operate from the first day after half term.  We hope you like it!

School Meals Payments: I’m sure you don’t need reminding that weekly payments for school meals should arrive on Monday mornings. However, there are a good number of parents who still send in their child’s dinner money on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or even Friday! Then, of course, it’s up to the child to remember to hand it in if it isn’t collected with the other payments. Monies are banked on Monday mornings so would the offending parents please turn over a new leaf and make a conscious effort to pay on time. For those parents who like to pay half-termly, the cost for meals for the next half-term will be £57.80, payable to Essex County Council.

Questionnaires: Thank you to everyone who returned a questionnaire.  The Disability Group will be analysing them and will let you know the results next week.  In the meantime you may like to know that we will be holding a Well-being, Disability and Communications Day next Friday (24th). During the day the children will take part in a number of events to help them to be more aware of how disability can happen to anyone and that it can be a positive not negative experience.  We will be raising their awareness that we are all different and we all have a role to play.   At the end of the day, in the hall, there will be a ‘display’ of the work carried out during that day. It will not be a polished event, just something that you may find of interest and that your child can talk about to you.

·          Winter Ball: If you didn’t already spot it, there was an error in the auction lots. Smith’s is in fact in Smithfields, not Spitalfields. Our apologies for any confusion caused.

School Council: There is a School Council meeting on Tuesday, 4th November.

Sporting Fixtures:

·          Home football and netball matches will take place against Little Hallingbury on Monday, 10th November.

·          Away football and netball matches against Takeley will take place on Wednesday, 12th November.

Class Assemblies: The children in Class 1 warmly invite you to their class assembly at 2.45 p.m. on Thursday, 6th November. Class 4’s assembly will be held on Thursday, 13th November.

Uniform: As parents may be buying new shoes and uniform over the holiday, can I please ask that shoes are ‘proper’ school shoes in black or brown and that they do not have flashing lights in them. We also have a number of children starting to wear decorative earrings.  Please ensure that only plain gold or silver studs are worn.

Morning snacks: As a healthy school we are keen to promote healthy eating.  It has come to my attention that a small number of children are coming to school on a regular basis with cakes and chocolate.  All children have access to fresh fruit at mid-morning break and eat their school lunch one hour later.  We ask that parents support us in encouraging a healthy snack at mid-morning.  Of course this may be brought from home if preferred.

Christmas Cards:  Last year we tried an experiment where instead of children buying and sending lots of Christmas cards, they signed a big card and money was donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital.  We thought we would try the same idea again, but this time link to the Help The Aged charity which is aiming to raise money for those elderly ladies and gentlemen who may be eating Christmas lunch alone this year.  Christmas cards can still be sent if you wish but we thought this was a good charity idea to support.

And finally … the OFSTED report has been delivered this morning.  We will send it out to all parents tomorrow.  It reads well, talking about the many very positive aspects of our school.  We hope you find it informative.  For those of you who are used to the old style report, this is the new, shortened version. Very different from previous ones!  Thank you to all the staff, parents, governors and children who helped us to achieve such a positive report.

AUTUMN TERM 2008 - NEWSLETTER 2

New morning and afternoon routines:  A big thank you to everyone for being so co-operative about waiting in the front playground at the beginning and end of school.  From a school and child management perspective it has been a big success.  We hope it still enables parents to gather and chat etc.  We will shortly be erecting a parents’ noticeboard which we hope will help with communication even more.

Awards:  At the end of last term we presented a number of awards to our children.  The Mike Nash Award, for being a good all-rounder in effort, work, attitude and helpfulness, went to Katie Dingle in Year 6.  The new Environmental Award, presented by the Hatfield Broad Oak Conservation Group, went to Harvey Broad for his dedication to nature and recycling in our school.

School Website:  A reminder - We have upgraded our website over the holidays.  Please have a look at it at www.StMarysHBO.org.uk.  We hope you find it useful for improving communications between school and home.  We intend to put each newsletter on and also most notes from teachers.  Let us know what you think.  Mr Adrian Birt, who runs our website, has found a good site for software that parents and children can use at home: www.software4students.co.uk.  You may wish to look at it.

PTA News:   There was lots of discussion at the PTA meeting on Monday and we were pleased to welcome some of our new parents.  We currently have a great deal of money in the bank due to tremendous fund raising over recent months: at the next meeting, decisions will be made about how to spend it for the benefit of your children.  The next meeting will be at The Cock Inn on Monday, 6th October at 8.00 p.m.

The Black Tie Winter Ball is getting close.  It’s being held on Friday, 21st November at Down Hall Country House Hotel and promises to be a very memorable evening.  Tickets are available now. Why not get together with some friends and make up a table?  Further details are available from Karen Donovan on 718994 or Linda Grimes 718375.

Harvest Festival:  Our Harvest Festival will be held next Friday afternoon (19th). This year we are raising money for Food Aid.  We are trying to raise £200 to provide seed, tools and other farming materials to help those in countries not as lucky as us.

We will start at 2.00 p.m. with an assembly in which all of the children will take part.  This will be followed at about 2.30 p.m. with an afternoon tea for which we will be asking for a donation of at least £2.00.  Previous years have shown that this is a popular format.  Please do try to come along and bring friends, neighbours and relatives.

We will also be selling garden produce that we hope will be donated during the week.  Please send along any garden produce such as potatoes, carrots, beans, apples, tomatoes etc. on the morning of Friday, 19th September.  Maybe you have some jars of home made jam or pickles?  All will be welcome.

Some of our children have been given invitations to deliver to friends and neighbours.  Please ensure these are delivered by this weekend.  If delivery is a problem, please return the envelopes to school.

Literacy Focus Evening:  We will be holding a literacy focus evening for parents on Wednesday,

24th September starting at 7.00 p.m.  It will follow a similar format to the one in April but will focus on how we teach reading, writing and spelling.  Please do try to come along.

Music Tuition:  Flute lessons will re-start on Monday, 15th September; Piano and violin lessons will start again on 19th September.

From the W.I:

All are welcome to join the Line Dancing sessions at the Village Hall starting on Tuesday, 16th September between 1.00 and 4.00 p.m.  (Parents will be able to go to collect their children at 3.15 p.m.)

Parents are also welcome to attend the coffee morning St Mary’s Church on Friday, 26th September in aid of Macmillan Nurses.  This starts at 11.00 a.m. and will include a raffle, bring and buy sale and cake stall (and coffee or tea!)
